On the 3rd August, 2015, the University of Benin community was formally notified that the Vice Chancellor Professor F.F.O. Orumwense approved the commencement of the University of Benin Annual Research Day (UBARD). The Annual Research Day is expected to be an annual event that will be devoted to highlighting "research conducted by members of academic staff as well as students (undergraduate, postgraduate and Fellow) in the University".

The overall goal of the UBARD is to stimulate, showcase and share research ideas and findings that are or would be of immense benefit to Policy makers, Industries and Humanity in general. In addition, it is expected that the UBARD will afford researchers in different disciplines opportunities to cross-fertilize ideas and also identify new areas for collaborative studies. Also the research findings and output would further enhance the visibility, accessibility and project the image of the University globally. The UBARD is expected to feature a keynote address by a world- renowned researcher. Posters and oral presentations by academic staff and students will also be encouraged.

In order to achieve the lofty objectives of the UBARD, a University- wide Committee has been constituted. The tasks of the Committee include, amongst others:

  1. Set a date for UBARD to create awareness among academic staff through fliers and other means of communication in the University
  2. Announce a call for abstracts and defining timelines for submission, review; accept/reject submitted abstracts for oral and poster presentation.

It is envisaged that handsome awards will be given to the most outstanding research outputs in the following: Medical, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacy, Law & Humanities, Social & Management Sciences, Agriculture, Science/Engineering and Education.Faculties in the University may henceforth be ranked on the basis of their research outputs that are showcased during the UBARD. The Committee has slated the first UBARD to hold tentatively between 20th and 21st October, 2015. To this end, the Committee has deemed it necessary to bring this to the notice of all academic staff in all the Faculties in the University through the Faculty Contact persons and to call for submission of extended Abstract of Completed or ongoing research project to be showcased during the two day event.

The extended Abstract should be between 3 and 5 pages in length, including references. The Abstract is expected to highlight very clearly the benefits of the research to the University in particular and humanity in general. It should be comprehensive enough with clearly defined value(s) added to the existing body of knowledge. It should be typed with 1.5 line spacing, using Font 12 and Times New Roman.
